From LinkedIn to Facebook...

I am a huge LinkedIn fan - I've been "linkedin" for almost four years. I joined linkedIn after reading an article in the WSJ ... I was stuck in the airport one December (holiday travel... always fun) and stumbled across the article and thought "hey, what a great recruiting tool". LinkedIn has proven to be a great source for recruitment, but it is also a great way to keep track of former colleagues etc. Are you linkedin? Feel freet to connect with me. Linked is sort of Facebook for adults...

So, Facebook ... Facebook has been around for quite awhile and is really geared towards Gen Y'ers. Since my team does college recruitment for niche skill sets (art, hardware, supply chain, manufacturing etc), I joined Facebook about a year ago, so I could check it out (it's true... I am sort of embarrassed to admit it).

Social networking is proving to be a fantastic way to source top talent. “As the job market heats up, interest in online business networking is starting to soar — turning a one-time novelty into a necessity for millions of business professionals in search of jobs or business contacts.” USA Today.

Tips on building out your Linked in (or Facebook) network...

  • The number of people you can view in LinkedIn is key to your networking success.
  • Reach out to your alumni associations, industry associations, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues.
  • Upload your Outlook Contacts to LinkedIn. You can see which have joined LinkedIn and invite them to join your network.
  • Connect with former colleagues and classmates. You will be surprised how many already LinkedIn.
  • Get to know people you don’t know. Gather intelligence on members employed at targeted companies. Search for those with connections, find commonalities and reference in your message.
  • Personalize your invitation emails. Avoid using the “standard text” invitations. You are inviting people you may or may not know to join your network. Making the message more personalized will go a long ways in strengthening the relationship
